So it has officially been what, almost two months since I visited this little space? Life has been busy and full, so much so that I just haven't really found the time to check in. Grayson is like a totally new and hilarious person, talking in sentences and developing this crazy personality. He keeps me busy every waking hour, and I'm so tired by the time he goes to sleep that I just sit with the husband, mindlessly watching TV until I go to bed...usually like an hour after G does.
There have been several times that I've thought about coming here to touch base a bit, but to be honest, I know there aren't many people still hanging around. I keep thinking I'll get back into things, work on getting my followers back, etc., but MAN...that sounds like a lot of work. Right now, I just can't muster up the energy.
Aside from watching Grayson grow into a full blown toddler who will be TWO in just over two weeks, I've pretty much been working at my little "work from home" job about 12 hours a week, attempting to plan his birthday party, and trying to keep him well. He's been sick with a cold, then a tummy virus, then another cold with a nasty cough, for the last three weeks. And now I've got a fever, massive headache, and am super fatigued - which is how I've found the time to write this little blog post. Daddy is entertaining him and mommy is laying in bed. On top of all the sickness, hubs has been traveling about 50% of the time with his job, so to say mama is tired is an understatement.
I fully intend to do a post with sharing all of Grayson's hilarious little quirks and sayings and whatnot before too long, but I think I've been overly ambitious already today ;) I hope everyone is doing amazing, and I hope when I do find my way back here some of you will still be around. Until next time!
I Am Not a "Pinterest" Mama
Monday, February 16, 2015
Much to my dismay, nearly two years into this gig of mommy, I've discovered that I'm just not a Pinterest worthy mom. My house isn't really Pinterest worthy, my wardrobe is lacking (quite a bit), my cooking certainly isn't anything to brag about, and I'm afraid my mommy skills just aren't as Pinterest-y as I had hoped.
Don't get me wrong, I think I'm a good mom. Actually, I know I am. I adore my son. I lavish him with attention and kisses and play time and fun whenever I possibly can. I teach him things, I discipline him as needed, I encourage him, I laugh with him, I read with him, I snuggle with him. I do all of these things, all day, every single day. But still - I find myself lacking.
Pinterest moms seem to do a fun, educational craft with their children each day. They seem to fix them lunches in elaborate designs that hit every single food group, every single time. They seem to dress their children in adorable outfits each day, even when they're just playing at home (but why?). They seem to do incredibly fun and memorable activities for each and every holiday - even the ones that don't really count. They not only do these things, but they take phenomenal photographs of their children and their activities that feature not only said activity but also a sparkling home in the background.
I'm not one to struggle with envy at this point in my life. I've been there, done that, and I'm quite content with where I am now. But I look at these blogs, these pins on my Pinterest feed, and I wonder - HOW. How on earth do they do it? I'm a stay-at-home mom. Aside from the 12 hours a week that I set aside to work and Nana watches Grayson, I am with him constantly. I have all the time in the world to clean and cook and craft and take photos of it. But somehow, at the end of the day, I'm lucky if I've cleaned the kitchen or swept the floor and maybe read a book or two or played with some puzzles. Sure, we play all day long. But how much of it is "intentional" play, where I'm actually, intentionally educating him as we go? When do these Pinterest mamas have time to do all these dang crafts? And when they're doing their crafts, who's cleaning their bathrooms and cooking their dinners?
I mean, let's be honest. Most days we wake up, brush our teeth, change a diaper, eat our breakfast, play, change another diaper, play, eat lunch, then nap. At this point when Grayson is blissfully sleeping is when I finally brush my hair and slap on some makeup. I might get dressed, or I might simply switch into more presentable yoga pants and a fresh t-shirt. Our afternoons are more of the same, interspersed with some cleaning or organizing here and there. If we have errands to run, of course I actually fix myself up to a degree and wear a "cute-for-a-young-mom-in-the-suburbs" outfit. But other than that, not so much.
My life doesn't look like my Pinterest boards. It's taken me awhile to come to terms with that. I just don't think I'm ever going to be the blogger who has exciting, detailed, over-the-top posts about the activities I've been doing with G. I don't think I'm ever going to be the mom on Instagram who looks like she just walked off of a magazine cover when she takes a selfie at Target. I'll probably always have cheerio crumbs scattered around my house and a few stray toys spread out over my living room floor. I'll probably always have that same stack of mail sitting on my kitchen counter. And I'll probably never remember that I need to start dinner until it's 20 minutes until we need to be eating.
Somehow, I'm OK with all of it. The messiness, the un-perfectness, the never really feeling like I'm accomplishing what I need to be. This is life. This is my life, with my toddler, and I just think that's how it's going to be for me. It's not glamorous, it's nothing to necessarily aspire to, but it is absolutely, positively the place I want to be.

Our Christmas - 2014
Saturday, January 17, 2015
I realize I'm almost a month late with this post, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that's ok. I've been focusing on a lot of different things in my life other than blogging, and for right now I only want to come here when it makes sense for me and I really have something to say. And today, I guess I've got something to say about Christmas ;)
This year our Christmas was pretty low key, and pretty perfect. The weekend before Christmas we went to Oklahoma to spend some time with my Dad, which Grayson absolutely loves. He could spent an entire day out at the barn with my dad, playing in the dirt and just generally being a real country boy. This is hilarious to me because when I was a child I had zero interest in my dad's barn or any of the horses inside of it. I was so not "country". And somehow I've got a son who is being raised right smack in the middle of a city and loves nothing more than being inside a smelly barn.
The next day, we went on to see my Uncles. We love spending time with those guys, and their place is pretty much our home away from home. Things are quite relaxed when we visit these days since Grayson is involved. Before he was a part of the group, we spent a lot of time going out and having drinks and staying up all night. Now I typically go to bed with Grayson around 10 or so (he gets to stay up late at the Guncles house), the hubs will stay up with the Uncles and mom having a glass or two of wine, then everyone's usually in bed by midnight. BIG change.
On Christmas Eve we had A's family as well as my parents over to our house for a little Christmas gathering and lunch. Grayson and his "big" cousin Haik played together more than they ever have before (Haik hasn't been Grayson's biggest fan thus far haha), so he had an absolute blast. After a very long and relaxed lunch/dinner, all of A's family headed home and we did our gift exchange with my parents. This year I swore I wouldn't go overboard because this kid already has so much stuff and doesn't NEED anything else, but I really just can't resist. And neither can my parents, apparently. We set out cookies for Santa and G got to stay up pretty late that night, too.
Christmas day we woke up early and did Santa gifts, as well as opened our stockings. Stockings have always been my favorite part of Christmas for some reason, so I made sure A knew he better stuff my stocking with some good stuff! After that, we headed north to Oklahoma for Christmas with my mom's side of the family. There are so many littles running around now with that side of my family, so it's just so much fun to watch them all playing together. There's Grayson who is 20 months, Isabella who is 21 months, Jayden who just turned one, and Jonah who turned one on Christmas day. It's so cute to see so many tiny ones right around the same age together. Wish we all got together more!
This year was so much fun because Grayson was really into it. He got excited about all his gifts, opened them on his own, and loves his toys so much. Last year he was just kind of taking it all in, but this year he was running around like a maniac and enjoying every minute. I can tell that every year is going to be more fun than the last one - hopefully in the future I can get it together and refrain from going overboard with things one spoiled little boy really doesn't need. Ha, good luck, right? Even though it's so ridiculously late to say this, I really hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with loved ones!
