A Circus Party ~ Grayson's First Birthday ~ Party Time!

Now that we've covered the party decor for Grayson's first birthday, I thought I'd post about the actual party. I had no idea what to expect really - we don't have many friends with kids, so we weren't sure how many people would really be interested in hanging out at a first birthday party. Luckily, our friends seem to either really like us or really like our kid, so we had a big turn out. A few of mine and the hubs family members came, too, although we actually had family get togethers the weekend before.
Since I've never hosted a kid's birthday party, I wasn't totally sure what to do. I decided since G is so little and there wouldn't be many other kids to not worry about activities. We didn't have any games or anything planned, but it ended up being just fine. The main events seemed to be the food, the opening of the gifts, and the cake. The party started at one and we did the cake around 3:30, and by that time Grayson was on an attention high and just about to crash. He absolutely loved being the center of attention for the whole party, though, and I'm pretty sure he would love it if we invited people over to watch him be cute every single weekend.
I have to say, the party was even more enjoyable than I thought it would be. And I learned a pretty valuable lesson, I think. Even though this was kind of thrown together last minute (sad that 3 weeks feels last minute) , everything was great. I hope that every year I can remember that it isn't about some extravagant, Pinterest-perfect party. Because seriously, what kid really cares about every little detail being perfect? I'm pretty sure that we could have had six balloons, a cake, and people to sing him "Happy Birthday" and he would have been just as happy :)
Oh - I did have another mommy-fail. I totally and completely forgot to get a picture of him in his special cake smash outfit. I ordered it from Etsy and it was the cutest thing EVER and I can't believe I didn't get one single picture of the whole thing! Insanity.

Oh well! We still had a wonderful time with all of our fabulous friends and family, and I'm so thankful to everyone that came to help Grayson celebrate!

A Circus Party ~ Grayson's First Birthday ~ The Decorations

So the good news is that my husband is quite amazing and he bought me a fancy new camera for Mother's Day...yaaaay!!! The bad news is, that just so happened to be the weekend AFTER Grayson's birthday party. Womp womp. So these pictures were taken with my little dinky point and click, and they are most certainly not the highest quality. But they got the job done.

When I was trying to come up with the "theme" for Grayson's party, I went back and forth between a few. A rockstar party was high on the list because he loves music so so much, and I also thought a pirate party would be fun. But at the end of the day I just fell in love with the idea of a circus party. I'm somewhat morally opposed to the actual circus (don't they seem kind of sad for the poor animals?), but a nice fake circus sounded great.

Like I said, I planned this in roughly three weeks, so I'm quite pleased with the outcome. It's certainly not a "Pinterest Worthy" party, but when I realized how stressful the planning was going to be on such a cramped time frame, I quickly decided that I wanted the day to be more about celebrating my baby boy with all of our friend and family than driving myself (and everyone else) bonkers striving for perfection. So we got a slightly quick and dirty version of a first birthday part, and I absolutely loved it. And so did G man, which is what really matters.

Oh! And this will be the first glimpse into our new house! Someday I plan on doing a house tour type thing....but who knows when that will be.

Guess we'll start outside - this wasn't too exciting, and everything out front was basically done on a whim. I decided people would need to know which house the party was at since this was the first time for most people coming to our new place, so it wasn't real thought out. But it worked!
In our front room I had my little made-over buffet front and center displaying a few photos of the baby of the hour. I also had the Dr. Seuss book "If I Ran The Circus" out to serve as a guest book of sorts. I just asked guests to leave a little note inside for Grayson to read someday. If you think this idea is genius, I totally can't take credit. I copied from one of the many circus parties that I pinned on Pinterest for inspiration. Pretty sure it was this one. But wait - don't go look at that party, it puts mine to shame.

In the front room I also displayed my favorite decoration, the chalkboard sign. I absolutely loved this thing, and it was so super cheap! I ordered it from this shop, and Racheal did such an amazing job. I hate that this is the only real photo I got featuring it. That glare, my reflection...sigh. Anywho, it was precious and I love that all of his quirky little favorites of the moment will be captured forever.
The kitchen/dining/living area was the main area where the party took place. I ended up having two tables of food - one for sweets and one for everything else, and then we had the drinks set up on the bar - which I totally forgot to take a photo of. For food we had cheddar bacon ranch pinwheels, buffalo chicken bites, and pizza bites, along with chips and guacamole, goldfish, a few different kinds of popcorn, and peanuts - which I think people thought were just decoration, because I don't think a single little peanut was eaten. Drinks were red punch, mimosas, sangria (don't judge the alcohol, our friends wouldn't have come without it. JK!) and then just water, sprite and coke. I would say the biggest hits were the buffalo chicken bites and the sangria. Those both went quick
On our sweets table we had animal crackers, M&Ms, the goodie bags (which had rubber duckies, sunglasses, bubbles, and goldfish) , and the cakes.

OK, can we talk about the cakes for a second? I randomly decided to post on our new neighborhood Facebook page, asking if anyone had a suggestion for someone who could do birthday cakes in our area, and like nine people commented mentioning this one woman in our neighborhood. She sent me a few photos of her work and I was sold. And you guys....they were PERFECT! Seriously, I was completely obsessed and wanted to cry when it was time to cut them. She and her mom do this out of her mom's kitchen (which sounds pretty amazing when she described it) , and they even made all the little figurine toppers and the banner! Seriously, cutest little birthday and smash cake I ever did see. Love love love.

Aside from the beverage area, which like I said, totally flaked on taking a pic of, the only other area of focus was the fireplace area where we had all the gifts, and then the backyard, which had minimal decorations. It was a gorgeous day, so several people decided to hang out back there for awhile after all the presents and cake and whatnot, so I'm glad I put up a few decorations.

Overall I have to say I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out. Grayson had an amazing time being the center of attention, and I think our guests enjoyed themselves. I actually ended up having a lot more fun than anticipated. You know when you're the host you always feel obligated to - well, host I guess? Somehow I was able to relax a bit and just enjoy. A lot of the credit for that goes to my amazing husband, my incredibly helpful mom, and my sweet best friend Rachel, who helped blow up balloons and put out food and decorate all morning, even though she is pregnant and miserable! With everyone's help things got done and I'm pretty proud of my little last minute first birthday party.

Now - I'll be back tomorrow (ehhhh, that's a bit iffy, not gonna lie) with the final birthday post. The one where you actually see pictures of the birthday boy :) Hope you'll join me!

Grayson's First Birthday Party ~ The Build-Up

Planning my first baby's first birthday didn't quite go down like I expected. If you guys recall, we listed our home for sale and started house hunting early this year kind of on a whim. We very quickly got our house ready to put on the market and started spending every free minute out and about, searching for the perfect place. In right around three or four weeks we sold our house, found a house, changed our minds, found another one, and got our offer accepted. We then had about a month to pack up everything in our lives and move it into our new place. I'm exhausted just typing it all out and remembering how insane it was.

After we got in to our new place and I started the incredibly fun yet ridiculously stressful job of trying to find a new place for all of our many, many things, I realized - umm, my child will be one in LESS than ONE MONTH and I need to plan an epic and memorable party. Like, yesterday.

Oh guys. I wish you could have witnessed the insanity that my life spiraled into. Not only did I need to plan this party in less than a month, I needed to get my house in the best possible condition it could be in - like, unpack all the boxes, try and decorate it all up to my ridiculous personal expectations, paint walls - you know, all of the things that really matter. (wink wink, heavy sarcasm)

But, as A promised about 347 times in my (daily) moments of sheer panic, it all got done. Of course there were some things I wanted to happen that didn't, and decorations I forgot about, and memorable activities that I accidentally bypassed, and photos I neglected to take. But all in all it was a pretty freaking fabulous party if I do say so myself. I relaxed and had fun, Grayson adored being the center of attention, and I think our guests enjoyed themselves.

By the way, I hope the above explains at least in part why I've been totally and completely GONE from the blogging world for the majority of the past three or so months. I do intend to come back on a regular basis, but I don't think it's quite time yet.

SO - this post was originally going to be all about the decorations and what I did and why and how and blah blah. But now that I've rambled on and on, I think it's gonna turn into a three part kinda thing. I'll be back tomorrow with the decorations, then the next day with the actual party photos that only I really want to see. That's a pretty lofty goal for a girl who hasn't blogged in months, but what can I say? I like to live on the edge.

I'll leave you with just a couple pics of the handsome little birthday boy to entice you to come back for the real deal.

And P.S. - I miss you all.

Planning G's First Birthday

This is kind of unbelievable to me, but in less than two months my baby will be ONE. How on earth the past 10 months have gone so fast is beyond me. I see this quote everywhere when people talk about motherhood: "The days are long, but the years are short", and man...I can see it. I absolutely adore every minute spent with this little guy, but some days do seem to last forever. And then I blink my eyes and he's another month older and I can't believe it.
So, needless to say, I should be in the full swing of the whole planning-a-first-birthday-party thing. But surprise, surprise, mama has been 100% preoccupied with all-things house related, and not a thing has been done. Oh, well, I started a Pinterest board. So there's that.

At first I was thinking a vintage car theme, now I'm kind of leaning toward a vintage circus theme...maybe I'm really just into the whole vintage thing right now? No idea. The strange thing is I have kind of a circus-aversion and feel like the animals are probably horribly mistreated and I don't think I ever want to take my kids to a circus....but yet I think a circus themed party would be adorable. This is what it's like in my mind, people. We're all over the place.

So basically I haven't made even one tiny decision. Other than the fact that it will probably take place at our brand new house, because we're supposed to move in the end of this month!! Woohoo!!! Which would give me approximately one month to plan his party and get the house completely and totally in order...doable, right? Ahahaha, I just love how insane I am. It's great fun. Unrealistic goals? Sure, sign me up!

We also might be doing a two birthday party thing, much like the two wedding thing we did a few years ago. You know those Armenians love a good party, and the husband and I are both quite sure that we won't be able to accommodate the crowd in our house. So we may do a baptism/Armenian birthday party one day, and a regular ole' run-of-the-mill American birthday party another. Who knows. I'm sure we'll decide at the verylastminute. Just to make things interesting.

All I know is my child will most likely be incredibly spoiled, will most likely have a fabulous time with all eyes on him since he seems to love attention, and will probably lose his mind if I let him have a smash cake because he's literally had like two bites of sugar ever. So I'm going to try to convince my over-achieving, unrealistic-goal-setting, slightly psychotic self that no matter what happens it will be a beautiful day filled with love, which is all a little one year old boy needs.

That, and lots of toys of course. Little boys need toys

A Half-Birthday Celebration

I guess I should have known that since I'm the type of person to celebrate my dog's birthday every year that I would also be the type of person to celebrate the half-birthday's of my children. The closer we got to the 6 month mark, the more I realized I couldn't just let it pass by unrecognized. So I gathered some craft supplies up, made a birthday banner, pureed G some food, bought him several presents, and had the grandparents come by to celebrate. Poor guy had zucchini as his b-day treat instead of cake and ice cream...and let me tell you, he was not pleased.

I've been hearing comments that lead me to think that some people think I'm a bit ridiculous. My grandmother told my mom that we better have some more kids, because if we're celebrating his half-birthday he's going to be awfully spoiled if he's the only one :) Arsen also made a remark about the fact that he got six gifts for six months and that it was insane, but in reality he only got five gifts...so ha! Totally not insane.
Even though I realize Grayson will absolutely never remember anything about his "celebration", and that yes, it might seem a bit crazy, I loved doing something special for my special guy. I'm really thriving on this mama stuff I think, so what can I say...it makes me happy. And a happy mama makes for a happy baby and a happy daddy, yes?

But I promise we won't have an actual celebration for every half birthday. Only the first one. I think. Actually, I'm not making any promises...

A Pretty Fab Birthday Weekend

A couple of weeks ago we celebrated my 29th birthday. Somehow I can't quite believe that this is the last year I'll spend in my 20s. Seriously, how did this happen? I'm not freaking out about it yet, but I have a feeling the closer I get to that next birthday....

Anyway, my birthday was on Saturday the 12th, and we started the "celebrating" on Thursday. My parents both came to visit and we spent the day shopping at IKEA/watching Grayson be cute. That night we all went out for a hibachi dinner. It was our first time taking Grayson to a hibachi place, and we lucked out and he slept for the first part. But of course he woke up right before the guy started cooking and stayed awake the rest of the time. Luckily the big fire didn't seem to freak him out, and we ended up having a really nice dinner.

My parents left Friday morning and Grayson and I spent the rest of the day being super lazy. I even laid down with him for his nap around 4 that afternoon. He woke us up about 4:30, and right before 5 we were hanging out in the living room when the doorbell rang. Addie started barking like a psycho and I waited to see if the person would go away because I was in sweats with gross hair and no makeup. They rang the doorbell again, so I gave in. When I opened the door, my best friend Rachel was standing there! I was absolutely shocked. She has been really good at surprising me lately, and Arsen has been good at keeping things a secret. Needless to say, I was super excited to see her and it improved my weekend by about a million percent.

Saturday Rachel took me out for lunch at Chuy's, which is probably my favorite place ever to eat. I'm pretty much addicted at this point. I crave their queso on a regular basis, and I swear they have the best coke around. If you're a devout coke drinker like myself then you know that everyone's coke tastes a little different. Anyway....after lunch she took me to get pedicures, which I haven't had done in forever. It was so much fun and super relaxing. I'm pretty sure we talked for about four hours straight. Even though I missed my little guy, it's nice to get out and do non-mama things every once in awhile.

That night we went to our favorite sushi restaurant here in Frisco,  Kotta Sushi Lounge, and had what was the best sushi dinner of my life. Totally serious. We got four rolls, and every single one of them was amazing. Grayson has turned into just the best baby ever, and he was happy as could be for the entire dinner. We came home and decided to watch Hangover 3, which was just as hilariously ridiculous as the others, and then went to bed immediately after. Super low-key evening, which was exactly what I wanted.

Sunday Rach had to go back home, so after I went and got a massage at 10, we all went to brunch at a local place called Lemon Bar that has become our favorite new brunch spot. After a bit of lounging around she left for Tulsa and I hung out with the boys and Addie Jane for the rest of the day. I'm not kidding when I say it was the perfect birthday weekend, which is hilarious. I had just one glass of champagne on Saturday night, was in bed before 1 AM both nights, and didn't do anything extravagant at all. It's truly crazy how quickly life can change and how much you can love it.

So here's to my 29th year. I have a feeling it's going to be my best one yet.
